Women are becoming more and more conscious of their independent roles in society and of their own lifestyle choices. As a result, it is very important for us to establish a society which has gender equality unhindered by custom and tradition. The "Mito Women's Plan" of 1995, the first step towards more equal opportunities between men and women, is aimed at allowing women to participate more fully in the social affairs of Ibaraki Prefecture and Japan. In order to realize a society where men and women can share equal responsibilities as citizens in every respect, we have declared Mito to be a "City of Gender Equality" on April 1, 1996.

Declaration of Gender Equality

Being rich in nature, Mito city, our home town, boasts a long and glorius history.

In order to lead the city of Mito to a more glorius future, based on the three fundamental ideas "equality, creativity, and peace", for the realization of a society where men and women share with each other in every respect.

1.We resolve to respect each other and build the city of Mito, where life can be carried on lively under equality.

2.We resolve to participate in any field of social affairs, on our own will, and build the city of Mito, where life is rich and comfortable enough to be handed over to the next generation.

3.We resolve to protect the environment of the earth and build the city of Mito, where the link of friendship and peace is expanded in all directions of the world.
